How Did 4/20 Get Started?

There have been countless legends about how 4/20 got its start, including rumors about music lyrics and the police code for a marijuana offense. Most agree, however, that the tradition actually got its start in San Rafael, California. A group of high schooners who called themselves “the Waldos” (a reference to the wall where they say after school each day) began searching for a supposed patch of cannabis plants in nearby woods.

They met each day at 4:20 p.m., just as football practice came to a close. Together, they’d smoke a joint and venture out to look for the weed patch. While they never found what they were looking for, the name 420 became synonymous with weed for the group.

A brother of one of the originators of 420 was a close friend of a member of the Grateful Dead. As the Waldos began spending time with the band, the term caught on. A reporter at the weed-centric magazine High Times got wind of the term, and 420 soon became synonymous with marijuana.

Today, 420 isn’t just a term used to refer to weed—it’s also cemented April 20th as a day for cannabis enthusiasts around the world to share their love for weed.
